| April-11-2011 Walleye action has been hot the last several days! We have been boating 50 to 100 fish a day, most fish are running 15 to 25 inches with a few hogs in the 28 to 30inch range mixed in. Vertical jigging in the main channel with ¼ ounce jigs and small shiners has been producing good numbers of fish. Casting crank baits at night and trolling crank baits night and day has been producing bigger fish. The key to boating the big fish has been getting away from the crowds and finding shallow feeding shelves along the main river channels. With the upcoming warmer weather, the lower bay should open in the next week or so. Once the bay is open, there will be smaller crowds and more room to find spawning and post spawn walleyes. We will be casting and trolling crank baits for numbers of 15 to 25 inch fish along with lots of big trophy size fish. As the ice continues to melt off and the bay opens later in the month, the Door County big fish bite will turn on, it’s still a few days to a week out, but the action will be hot as soon as the ice clears. Night time is the right time for this bite! Another great late April big walleye bite will be going on in the Oconto, Peshtigo, and Marinette area. We will find good numbers of large post-spawn fish near the river mouths. This is a multi-species bite, you can expect to find large pike and brown trout mixed in with walleyes.
