The 2007 fishing was season kicked off in early March with some fantastic ice out brown trout action along the Lake Michigan ports. Limit catches of these hard fighting; tasty fish were common on nearly every trip. Trolling with various crankbaits in five to twenty feet of water was the top presentation.
The month of March also produced some amazing walleye fishing; the Fox River produced several, hundred fish days. Walleyes averaged 18 to 24 inches, along with several fish in the 10 pound range! Jigging and casting crankbaits were the top early season tactics. As the walleyes found their way back out into the bay in mid April the trolling bite was on fire! Pulling spinner rigs in shallow water accounted for numerous trophy eyes.
The upper lakes of the Winnebago system provided some outstanding “eater” walleye action from early to mid May. Walleyes from 14-20 inches were pretty standard during this period. Trolling small crankbaits in 3-6 feet of water produced limit catches.
Late May through early June provided some outstanding muskie and walleye action on Green Bay. Days with multiple muskie releases were common along with some large fish in the fifty inch range. Trolling spinners in the lower bay also produced several huge walleyes at this time.
Lake Michigan continues to produce some of the finest trout and salmon fishing in years. June through early August provided some amazing action for these delicious, tackle busting trophies! Salmon action was best from an hour before sunrise to about three hours after. Flasher and fly combos produced best, with glow spoons accounting for many large kings. Rainbow trout were very common on every trip, these acrobatic trout were taken mostly on smaller spoons run in the top five feet of water of the water column, over several hundred feet of water.
Trophy walleyes were the target from mid August through early September. The Door County waters of Green Bay are known for monster eyes. Trolling large spinner rigs for suspended fish produced many ten pound plus walleyes during this late summer period.
Fall is big muskie time, and 2007 was no exception. Many fish over fifty inches were boated this past fall, and multiple release days were the norm. Casting and Trolling with crankbaits in Lower Green Bay and the Fox River produced many fish.
